The Fabulous Jalopy

Elif Alp, New York, NY, Documentary Short, 7:08, Brooklyn Premiere!

What brings members of a community together, and what keeps them coming back? This film, by first-time filmmaker and full-time sociologist Elif Alp, explores answers to these questions in a space dedicated to preserving folk music, The Fabulous Jalopy Theater and School of Music, in Brooklyn, NY. A safe haven for inspiration and creation, the venue provides an oasis for the musical misfits mainstream spaces repel. It's these very misfits who safeguard a tradition of sound, interchange, and shared learning that is otherwise lost in dusty record bins. Without this community anchor, folk music today would be short of one more important home.
